Although within England’s heavily populated south east, both East Sussex and West Sussex are surprisingly rural counties. More than sixty percent of their land area is arable or pasture. Brighton is a definite outlier though: As well as being a major commercial and cultural centre it attracts visitors, commuters and second home owners from the capital (and is known by some as London by the Sea). Northern parts of Sussex centred on Crawley are just 30 miles/35 minutes by rail from central London. They’re within the London commuter belt and close to London Gatwick Airport.
